Independence Day, known colloquially as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the Declaration of Independence. On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress ratified this historic document, officially establishing the United States of America.

The Birth of a Nation

• Background: During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the thirteen colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776. On that day, the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence proposed by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia, declaring the United States free from British rule.
• The Declaration of Independence: After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence. The Committee of Five, led by Thomas Jefferson, prepared this statement, which explained the decision to break away from British monarchy. Jefferson largely wrote the declaration in isolation over 17 days in Philadelphia, and it was approved on July 4, 1776.
• John Adams’ Prediction: A day earlier, John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail: “The second day of July 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival.”
